FAQ

What is Hong Kong's statutory minimum wage?

From 1 May 2025 the statutory minimum wage is HK$42.1 per hour (raised from HK$40), based on average hourly pay over a wage period, not each hour separately. At 40 hours/week and 52 weeks/year, HK$42.1 is about HK$7,297 a month (about HK$8,027 at 44 hours). Check the Labour Department's guidance for the exact method.

How do I convert an annual salary to monthly, weekly and hourly?

Monthly = salary ÷ 12; weekly = salary ÷ weeks per year (52); hourly = weekly ÷ hours per week. At 600,000 with 52 weeks and 40 hours: monthly 50,000, weekly ≈ 11,538.46, hourly ≈ 288.46 (also 600,000 ÷ 2,080). Fewer weeks or hours entered raises the derived weekly/hourly rate, so use realistic figures.

How should I set weeks per year and hours per week?

Weeks per year is usually 52, but lower it if you want to net off paid leave. Hours per week is your average actual working hours (full-time commonly 40–48). Entering fewer hours raises the hourly rate, so use your true average including regular overtime, or you will overstate it.

Is the converted pay my actual take-home amount?

No. All figures are pre-tax nominal amounts, not what you actually receive. Between nominal pay and take-home, salaries tax and MPF contributions are deducted (MPF is retirement saving, not a loss). This calculator only converts across periods; for after-tax or post-MPF income use the Salaries Tax or MPF calculators.

What formulas does this calculator use?

Standard period conversions: monthly = annual ÷ 12; weekly = annual ÷ weeks per year; hourly = weekly ÷ hours per week (= annual ÷ (weeks × hours), default 2,080). These are arithmetic definitions, not a statutory formula. For minimum-wage comparisons, follow the Labour Department's 'total wages ÷ total hours' principle.
