FAQ

How do I convert an annual salary to hourly and daily rates?

Three steps. First, total hours = hours per week × weeks per year (e.g. 40 × 50 = 2,000). Second, hourly wage = annual salary ÷ total hours (600,000 ÷ 2,000 = 300). Third, daily wage = hourly × hours per day (300 × 8 = 2,400). The key assumption is 'weeks per year': a year has 52 weeks but most people take leave, so 48–50 is common; fewer weeks means a higher hourly rate for the same salary. Use 52 for a nominal, no-leave figure.

Why convert salary to hourly — what is it for?

It is a powerful comparison tool. It lets you fairly compare a salaried job with an hourly/contract/freelance job on the same basis; it reveals the true 'value of time' (two jobs at the same salary but different hours have very different hourly rates); it helps judge whether overtime or side work is worth it (using your baseline hourly rate); and it is a starting point for freelance pricing. It also informs everyday 'money-for-time' decisions.

Is comparing hourly rate alone enough?

No. The result is pre-tax nominal pay; actual take-home is lower after salaries tax and MPF. Full-time jobs also carry benefits (paid leave, medical, bonuses, stability) not reflected in the hourly number. And if you work unpaid overtime, your true hourly rate is lower than the figure. Read it within the full context of tax, benefits, real hours and non-financial factors.

How does my hourly wage compare with Hong Kong's minimum wage?

Hong Kong's statutory minimum wage is HK$42.1 per hour from 1 May 2025. You can compare your converted hourly rate against it. Note the minimum wage is based on actual hours worked, while this calculator uses nominal hours you enter; frequent unpaid overtime lowers your real hourly rate. The latest figure is from the Labour Department.

Does the hourly conversion include overtime pay?

No. It simply does salary ÷ total hours, assuming the salary covers all entered hours, with no split between normal and overtime and no overtime premium. Extra overtime pay raises your real rate; unpaid overtime lowers it. Hong Kong has no uniform statutory overtime rate — it follows the employment contract. For accuracy, fold expected overtime income into the salary and overtime hours into total hours, or use the Overtime Calculator separately.
