At a glance:Salary to hourly converts a 'monthly' or 'annual' salary into an 'hourly wage' by hours assumptions, so a salaried full-time role can be compared on the same base as hourly, contract or freelance work. Core relation: hourly = annual ÷ (hours/week × weeks/year); equivalently hourly = monthly × 12 ÷ (hours/week × weeks/year). 'Hours per week' and 'weeks per year' are the key assumptions — total annual working hours. A year has 52 weeks, but deduct leave: 48–52 is common. The result is a pre-tax nominal hourly rate; net of Salaries Tax and MPF. Salaried full-time roles usually carry paid statutory holidays, paid annual leave and benefits (medical, bonuses, stability) absent from hourly work, raising the effective hourly rate; overtime may exceed this hourly rate. Consider these together.

Formula

Hourly = annual ÷ (hours/week × weeks/year).

Hourly = monthly × 12 ÷ (hours/week × weeks/year).

$$\text{HourlyWage} = \dfrac{\text{AnnualSalary}}{\text{HoursPerWeek} \times \text{WeeksPerYear}}$$
$$\text{HourlyWage} = \dfrac{\text{MonthlySalary} \times 12}{\text{HoursPerWeek} \times \text{WeeksPerYear}}$$

How to Use

  1. Choose the input basis (monthly or annual).
  2. Enter the salary and your hours per week and weeks per year.
  3. View the computed hourly wage.

At 40 hours/week and 52 weeks/year, monthly salary converted to hourly wage

At 40 hours/week and 52 weeks/year, monthly salary converted to hourly wage
Monthly salaryAnnualHourly (40h × 52wk)
HK$10,000HK$120,000HK$57.7
HK$20,000HK$240,000HK$115.4
HK$30,000HK$360,000HK$173.1
HK$50,000HK$600,000HK$288.5
HK$80,000HK$960,000HK$461.5

At 40h/week, 52 weeks/year: hourly = monthly × 12 ÷ (40 × 52). Reducing weeks/year (e.g. 48) raises the hourly rate (fewer hours → higher rate per hour). For reference, HK's statutory minimum wage is HK$42.1/hour from 1 May 2025; reaching it needs annual income above the corresponding line. All figures are pre-tax nominal, net of Salaries Tax and MPF. Case Studies

Monthly HK$50,000 at 40h/week: weeks-per-year swings the hourly rate

At 52 weeks/year: hourly = 50,000 × 12 ÷ (40 × 52) ≈ HK$288.5. This is the standard full-year annualisation.

But the 'weeks per year' assumption clearly moves it: same salary and hours, 48 weeks → 50,000 × 12 ÷ (40 × 48) ≈ HK$312.5 — about HK$24/hour higher (~8.3%). Use 48–50 weeks to reflect post-leave actual hours (salaried staff on paid leave earn over fewer worked hours); use 52 for the nominal full-year average.

Freelance quoting: from annual target to hourly rate

Say you target annual income HK$360,000 and expect to bill 30h/week, 48 weeks/year → hourly = 360,000 ÷ (30 × 48) = HK$250. That sets a quote floor.

But freelance lacks paid leave, medical and stability; to match a full-time equivalent, raise the rate ~20–30% (e.g. HK$300–325) for benefits and non-billable time. Also allow for tax (profits tax / Salaries Tax) and MPF. Use this site's freelance-rate / annual-income tools for deeper planning.

FAQ

How do I convert salary to hourly wage?

Formula: hourly = annual ÷ (hours/week × weeks/year); or hourly = monthly × 12 ÷ (hours/week × weeks/year). Example: monthly HK$50,000, 40h/week, 52 weeks/year → 50,000 × 12 ÷ (40 × 52) ≈ HK$288.5. The key variables are 'hours per week' and 'weeks per year' (total annual hours). A year has 52 weeks, but most people are not working all year — deduct annual/unpaid leave, so 48–52 is common. Fewer weeks (more leave) → higher hourly rate; more hours per week → lower hourly rate. Use an average if weekly hours vary. This is the reverse of hourly-to-salary; this site also has an hourly-to-salary tool.

Why convert salary to hourly, and what is it for?

Salary-to-hourly conversion is useful in many situations. First, comparing jobs with different pay bases: a salaried full-time offer vs an hourly contract/freelance role with different units. Converting to hourly puts them on the same 'pay per hour' base to see who earns more effectively. Second, freelance and side-hustle quoting: freelancers/contractors set project or hourly prices; know your equivalent hourly rate from annual income to price reasonably and avoid undercharging. Third, leave and hours impact: salaried staff paid over 52 weeks but taking more leave have a lower effective hourly rate; comparing hourly rates reveals the real gap. Fourth, part-time/contract pricing: set a reasonable hourly rate from annual income. Fifth, understanding pay efficiency: hourly makes overtime, extra hours and efficiency visible. In short, hourly and annual are different expressions of the same pay; converting freely aids comparison and decisions. This site also has a salary-to-hourly and hourly-to-salary tool.

Is the converted hourly rate enough on its own? What to watch?

The hourly conversion is a useful comparison tool, but 'the hourly number alone' is not enough to fully assess pay. First, it is pre-tax nominal; net of Salaries Tax and MPF. Second, stability and guaranteed hours: hourly income depends on having work; if hours are unstable the ideal-hours hourly rate overstates actual average. Third, benefits: full-time roles carry paid statutory holidays, paid annual leave, sick leave, medical, bonuses, retirement and stability — real value absent from a simple hourly figure. A salaried role with good benefits may beat an hourly role of similar rate. Fourth, overtime: if hourly work pays overtime, actual effective rate is higher. ⚠️ Use the hourly rate as a starting point for quantitative comparison, then judge with tax, benefits and hours stability. This calculator is for educational and estimation purposes.

Does leave affect the hourly rate, and how?

Yes, markedly. The formula divides salary by 'hours/week × weeks/year' — the denominator is total annual working hours. Salaried staff are paid over 52 weeks but may take paid annual leave / statutory holidays, so their 'actually worked' weeks are fewer yet pay is unchanged → effective hourly rate rises. Conversely, if you count only worked weeks (48) you get a higher hourly rate than the 52-week nominal. When comparing, state the hours base clearly; for salaried staff use 'annual salary ÷ actual annual working hours' for the real effective rate. The site's annual-leave / paid-leave tools can help refine.

Is the freelance hourly rate the same as this result?

This calculator uses 'salary ÷ hours' as the basic conversion, giving the average hourly rate under the hours assumption. For freelance quoting you usually need to add: 1) benefits (paid leave, medical) a full-time role provides, ~20–30%; 2) non-billable time (sales, admin, training) — effective billable hours are fewer, raise the rate; 3) tax (profits tax / Salaries Tax) and mandatory MPF; 4) risk and gaps between projects. So the freelance quote is usually higher than this basic hourly rate. Use this as a floor, then adjust per the above. This site's freelance / annual-income tools help.
