At a glance:Car Loan EMI is the fixed monthly repayment when you finance a car: pay a down payment, borrow the balance, repay by equal monthly instalments (reducing balance). loan = car price - down payment; r = rate/12, n = term x 12; EMI = loan x r(1+r)^n/((1+r)^n - 1). Early payments are mostly interest, later mostly principal. Example: HK$300k price, HK$60k down, 9%, 5y → loan HK$240k, EMI ≈ HK$4,982, interest ≈ HK$58,920. WARNING: Many HK car loans are quoted as 'flat rate'; the same number costs far more than reducing-balance — compare on APR. Excludes fees, insurance, licence, penalties. Education, not advice.

Formula

Loan amount = car price - down payment (floor 0).

Monthly rate r = annual rate / 12; n = term x 12.

EMI = loan x r x (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n - 1); total payment = EMI x n; total interest = total payment - loan.

$$EMI = P \times \dfrac{r(1+r)^{n}}{(1+r)^{n} - 1}, \quad r = \dfrac{\text{annualRate}}{12}, \quad n = \text{years} \times 12$$
$$P = \text{CarPrice} - \text{DownPayment}, \quad \text{TotalInterest} = EMI \times n - P$$

How to Use

  1. Enter the car price and the down payment you plan.

FAQ

How is the EMI calculated and how does the down payment affect it?

Two steps. First, loan amount = car price - down payment (e.g. 300,000 - 60,000 = 240,000). Second, EMI by the equal-instalment annuity formula with r = rate/12, n = term x 12. At 9% for 5 years, EMI ≈ 4,982. The payment is fixed; only the principal/interest split changes monthly. A higher down payment lowers the loan, so the EMI and total interest both fall — the most direct way to cut cost.

What is the difference between reducing-balance and flat rate?

This is the most misunderstood part of car loans. There are two quote bases: reducing-balance (this tool, and mortgages) charges interest on the remaining balance, so interest falls as you repay — it is the APR basis. 'Flat rate' charges interest on the ORIGINAL full principal for the whole term even as you repay, so it costs far more. The same headline number (e.g. '5% flat') is roughly '9-10% APR' — nearly double. Dealers often quote a low flat rate to make the payment look cheap. Always ask whether a quote is flat or APR and compare on APR.

What hidden costs should I watch?

This tool estimates EMI and interest only. Real car loans add arrangement fees, loan insurance, early-repayment penalties; buying the car also adds first registration tax, licence, insurance, maintenance. Cars depreciate, so a long term risks negative equity (owing more than the car is worth). This tool compares down-payment/rate/term combos; it does not replace the lender's formal quote.

What are the conditions for a HK car loan?

HK car loans are offered by banks and finance companies. Applicants usually need to be 18+, hold a HKID, and provide income proof (payslips, tax demand, bank statements) and address proof. Lenders check the credit report (TransUnion), debt-servicing ability (DSR) and vehicle (new/used, age) to set the amount, term and rate. Good credit and stable income usually get better rates; loan-to-value and max term vary by lender and vehicle age. Terms are per the lender; borrow only what you can repay.

Can I repay a car loan early, and are there penalties?

Most allow partial or full early settlement, but many contracts charge an early-repayment fee or penalty. Under reducing-balance, early repayment saves future interest; under a flat-rate loan it may not save proportionally and you may still owe fees. Ask the lender about early-repayment terms before signing, then judge if it pays off.
