Real GDP Calculator
From nominal GDP and the GDP deflator, compute real GDP: nominal GDP ÷ (GDP deflator ÷ 100), the true output after stripping out price changes.

Results
At a glance:Real GDP is output at constant prices. Real GDP = nominal GDP ÷ (GDP deflator ÷ 100). Dividing by the deflator removes the effect of price rises, so real GDP reflects the true volume of production.
Formula
Real GDP = nominal GDP ÷ (GDP deflator ÷ 100).
$$\text{Real GDP} = \dfrac{\text{Nominal GDP}}{\text{GDP Deflator} / 100}$$How to Use
- Enter the nominal GDP.
- Enter the GDP deflator.
- Read the real GDP.
FAQ
Why use real GDP instead of nominal GDP?
Nominal GDP is measured at current prices and is inflated by price rises, so it can grow even when output is flat. Real GDP strips out price changes using a base year, reflecting only the change in actual output — the better gauge of real economic growth.
What does a negative real GDP mean?
It means output fell after adjusting for prices — a sign of economic contraction. Two consecutive quarters of negative real GDP growth is the common definition of a technical recession.
How is the GDP deflator related to real GDP?
The deflator = nominal GDP ÷ real GDP × 100; it measures the overall price level. Rearranging gives real GDP = nominal GDP ÷ deflator × 100, which is exactly this calculator's formula. A higher deflator means more price inflation eating into nominal growth.
Can the deflator be 100, and what is the base year?
In the base year, the deflator is set to 100 by definition, so real and nominal GDP are equal then. As prices rise in later years, the deflator exceeds 100 and real GDP is lower than nominal. The choice of base year affects the absolute level but not the growth-rate comparison.
What are the limitations of real GDP?
Real GDP captures market output but ignores income distribution, environmental costs, household unpaid work and well-being. It also does not reflect whether growth is sustainable. Use it as a core macro indicator, not the sole measure of living standards.
