FAQ
How do 'X% off' and Hong Kong's 'discount tier' relate?
They describe the same thing from opposite angles and add up to 100%. 'X% off' is the percentage taken off the original price; Hong Kong's 'discount tier' (e.g. 30%-off) is the percentage you pay. So 30% off = pay 70% = '30%-off' (30% off). The calculator's 'percent off' field takes the discount percentage (the X in X% off). If you see a tier like 30%-off, convert it with 100 − 70 = 30 and enter 30.
Why can't I just add percentages for 'discount on discount'?
A second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original. Example: 20% off then a further 10% off is 100 × 0.8 × 0.9 = 72, i.e. 28% total off, not 30%. The more discounts stacked, the bigger the gap from simple addition. Use this calculator in two steps (first discount → new price → second discount) for the accurate result.
Does a bigger percent off always mean a better deal?
Not necessarily. Some shops inflate the 'original price' before advertising a big discount, so the final price is close to normal. Compare against the usual selling price or other shops, not just the headline discount. Also avoid buying things you don't need just because they are on sale.
Does the result include tax or extra charges?
This tool computes only the price after a single percentage discount and does not include tax, service charges, delivery fees or other surcharges. The actual amount payable follows the merchant's final checkout.
How do I reverse-calculate the original or the discount percent?
The three are linked: sale price = original × (1 − percent÷100). If you know original and sale price, discount% = (original − sale) ÷ original × 100. If you know sale price and discount%, original = sale ÷ (1 − percent÷100). For the reverse of 'how much off', use this site's mark-down calculator.
