At a glance:BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)². General categories: <18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, ≥30 obese. Age-adjusted healthy ranges: <40 use 18.5–24.9; 40–64 use 20–27; 65+ use 23–28 (studies suggest a slightly higher BMI correlates with lower mortality in old age).

Formula

BMI = weight ÷ (height/100)².

Age adjustment: <40 → 18.5–24.9; 40–64 → 20–27; 65+ → 23–28.

categoryCode: 0 underweight / 1 normal / 2 overweight / 3 obese.

How to Use

  1. Enter height, weight and age.
  2. The system calculates BMI, the general category and the age-adjusted healthy range.

Case Studies

165 cm, 65 kg, 70 years

BMI = 65 ÷ 1.65² = 23.9.

General category: normal (18.5–24.9).

65+ adjusted range 23–28; 23.9 falls within it, which is ideal.

FAQ

Why can older people have a higher BMI?

Observational studies find that people over 65 with a BMI of 23–28 have lower mortality, possibly related to a buffer against illness and nutritional reserves. This does not mean obesity is harmless — waist circumference and muscle mass should still be considered.

Is the age-adjusted range a medical standard?

There is no single official standard; it is a practical guideline synthesising multiple studies. This tool uses a three-tier split for reference only. For a formal assessment, consult a healthcare professional, especially when chronic conditions are present.

Won't the adjusted range be too lenient for young people?

It will. Younger people (<40) should still maintain the stricter 18.5–24.9 standard. The tool switches automatically by age and does not relax the range for the young.

Does high muscle mass affect the reading?

Yes. Fit individuals may show a high BMI but low body fat and should not be labelled obese. Judge together with body-fat percentage or waist circumference; use the lean-body-mass method when needed.

What do the categoryCode values mean?

0 = underweight (<18.5), 1 = normal (18.5–24.9), 2 = overweight (25–29.9), 3 = obese (≥30). It is the numeric code of the general BMI category.

How is this different from the target-weight calculator?

The target-weight calculator back-solves weight from a fixed BMI band; this tool first computes BMI then gives an age-adjusted range, emphasising that the same BMI means different things at different ages. They can be used together.
