FAQ
Which BMI standard should I use?
In Asia/Hong Kong, 18.5–22.9 is commonly normal, 23–24.9 overweight-pre obese, and ≥25 obese; the international WHO uses 18.5–24.9 as normal. This tool lets you enter either set manually.
The weight I got is far from what I expected?
BMI only uses height and weight and does not distinguish muscle. Muscular people (e.g. athletes) can have a high BMI yet be healthy; in that case set goals with body-fat or lean-mass methods instead.
Is setting the target BMI lower bound too low dangerous?
BMI < 18.5 is underweight; too low may affect hormones, bone density, and immunity. Unless medically advised, keep the lower bound at 18.5 or above for safety.
How is this different from the ideal weight (body-fat) calculator?
This tool works backward from a BMI range — simple and universal; the body-fat method is more precise using actual body composition. They complement each other: use BMI for the big picture, then fine-tune with body fat.
Is it suitable during pregnancy or for the elderly?
Pregnancy has separate weight-gain guidance; the elderly with muscle loss may be safer at a slightly higher BMI (e.g. 22–27). This tool is for general adults; consult a healthcare professional for special cases.
What after reaching the target weight?
Treat it as a maintenance phase: keep weight via energy balance and assess health with body fat, waist circumference, etc., not just a single number.
