HK$332,122.4

At a glance:Loan = boat price - down payment. Monthly payment is the amortised (reducing-balance) instalment; total interest = total paid - principal. A larger down payment or shorter term lowers total interest. The calculator uses APR (reducing-balance), not a flat rate. Example: HK$800,000 yacht, 20% down, 6%, 15y → loan HK$640,000, monthly ~HK$5,401, interest ~HK$332,123.

Formula

Loan amount = boat price − down payment (floor at zero).

Monthly payment = P × r / (1 − (1 + r)^−n), r = annual rate / 12, n = term years × 12.

Total interest = monthly payment × n − P.

$$r = \\dfrac{\\text{Annual rate}\\%}{12},\\quad n = \\text{Term (years)} \\times 12$$
$$\\text{Monthly payment} = \\text{Loan amount} \\times \\dfrac{r}{1 - (1+r)^{-n}}$$

How to Use

  1. Enter the boat price and down payment.
  2. Enter the annual rate (APR) and term.
  3. View loan amount, monthly payment and total interest.

FAQ

How does down payment change the cost?

A bigger down payment directly cuts the loan, so both the monthly payment and total interest fall. Comparison: at 20% down the monthly is ~HK$5,401 and interest ~HK$332k; at 40% down monthly ~HK$4,051 and interest ~HK$249k — HK$160k more down saves ~HK$83k interest. But keep enough cash for mooring, insurance and maintenance; do not lock all liquidity into the boat.

Why be careful with a long term?

Lengthening the term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest sharply. Comparison: HK$640k at 6% over 10y monthly ~HK$7,105, interest ~HK$213k; over 20y monthly ~HK$4,585, interest ~HK$460k (more than double). Boats depreciate and are costly to keep; a 20-year term can leave 'the boat old but the loan unpaid'. Weigh carefully.

What costs are not in the monthly payment?

This is principal + interest only. Real ownership adds mooring/berth fees, insurance, maintenance and repairs, licensing and registration, and fuel. These often rival or exceed the finance cost, so budget the full cost of ownership, not just the instalment.

What rate basis should I compare?

Always compare on an APR (reducing-balance, effective annual rate) basis, including fees, not a flat rate some dealers quote. A flat rate understates the true cost. Ask for the APR and total cost of credit before signing.

Any Hong Kong notes?

Hong Kong boat loans are offered by banks and marine-finance firms; watch the APR, arrangement fees and early-repayment terms. Pleasure boats also carry licensing, insurance and berth costs. Keep the loan within your debt-servicing capacity (see the debt-to-income ratio) and do not over-leverage a depreciating asset.
