FAQ
Do Hong Kong restaurants require a tip?
Most Hong Kong cha chaan teng and Chinese restaurants do not expect tips, but upscale restaurants and hotels usually add a 10% service charge listed on the bill. If a service charge is already included, you may set the tip to 0 or top up only for exceptional service.
How much should I tip?
Common reference: casual dining 10%–15%, good service 15%–20%, bars about $1–2 per drink. Japan and Korea generally do not tip; some European bills already include service ('service compris').
Tip on pre- or post-tax amount?
Conventionally the tip is based on the pre-tax subtotal since tax goes to the government, not service. If only the post-tax total is shown, using it is fine — the difference is usually small.
What if the split is not even?
This calculator divides the total by party size to the cent for easy payment. If it still does not divide evenly, let one person cover the remainder, or use the result as a base and adjust manually.
Tip for delivery and takeaway?
Delivery platforms usually include a delivery fee; extra tipping is personal choice. Takeaway normally needs no tip. Small rounding-up is fine if you want to thank the staff.
Service charge vs tip?
A service charge is a uniform fee set by the merchant and shown on the bill (usually retained by the house), while a tip is an extra given by the customer mainly to the direct server. They differ — confirm whether a service charge is already included before tipping.
