At a glance:Discounting subtracts the discount amount from the original price. Savings = original × discount%; final price = original − savings = original × (1 − discount%). Effective rate paid = (1 − discount%) × 100%, e.g. 20% OFF means paying 80%.

Formula

Amount saved = original price × discount% ÷ 100.

Final price = original − saved = original × (1 − discount%).

Effective rate paid = (1 − discount%) × 100%.

$$P_{final} = P_{orig} \times (1 - \frac{d}{100})$$

How to Use

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the discount percentage (e.g. 20 for 20% off).
  3. The tool returns final price, amount saved and effective rate paid.

Case Studies

Clothing 20% OFF

Original $599, discount 20%, saved = 599 × 0.2 = $119.8.

Final price = 599 − 119.8 = $479.2, paying 80%.

Member 15% off (85折)

Original $1,000, discount 15% (85折 = minus 15%), final = $850, save $150.

FAQ

Is '8折' the same as '20% OFF'?

The amounts are the same but the wording differs: '8折' means paying 80% of the original, equal to minus 20% (20% OFF). In Chinese '打幾折' refers to the share paid, while English '% OFF' refers to the share reduced. In this tool always use 'discount percentage (how much reduced)'.

How to combine multiple discounts, e.g. 9折 then 8折?

Multiple discounts do not simply add (9折 + 8折 ≠ 7折); they multiply: effective rate = 0.9 × 0.8 = 0.72, i.e. 28% OFF total, paying 72%. This tool handles a single discount; for stacked discounts multiply them into a total effective rate first (e.g. 28% OFF) before entering.

The 'original price' is often inflated before discounting — how to judge a real deal?

Compare against the actual low price you can normally get, not the tagged original. Use this tool to get the final price, then compare with other channels, historical prices or member prices; if the difference is small it may not be a bargain.

Do I add consumption tax after the discount?

In Hong Kong most goods are priced tax-inclusive (no general sales tax). Overseas (e.g. Japan, EU) the discount usually applies to the pre-tax price, then local tax is added. For tax-inclusive results use a GST/VAT calculator on the final price.

What discount is 'buy 2 get 1 free'?

For 3 items you pay for 2, effective rate = 2/3 ≈ 66.7%, about 33% OFF or 6.7折. Estimate the per-item discount as '1 item price ÷ 3-item total'.

Can a promo code and member discount stack?

It depends on the merchant's terms; some allow stacking, some take the better one. When stacking, again use multiplication for the total effective rate; if only the better applies, take the larger discount. Check the fine print and excluded items at checkout.
