Tile Adhesive Calculator
Enter the tiling area and adhesive bed thickness (thin-set 3–5 mm) to calculate the tile adhesive (thin-set mortar) volume and weight for home or site tiling.

At a glance:Thin-set adhesive volume = area × bed thickness (mm) ÷ 1000 × (1 + waste%). Weight = volume × adhesive density. The thin-bed (thin-set) method uses a much thinner layer (3–5 mm) than traditional sand-cement (15–20 mm), saving material and giving a flatter bed; it is the modern standard for tiling. Large or heavy tiles and outdoor use need a suitable modified adhesive (C2/C2TES etc.).
Formula
Volume = area × thickness/1000 × (1 + waste%)
Weight = volume × density
$$V = A\frac{t}{1000}(1+w)$$$$M = V\rho$$How to Use
- Enter the tiling area (m²).
- Enter the bed thickness (thin-set 3–5 mm).
- Confirm the adhesive density and waste.
- The tool outputs the adhesive volume and weight.
Case Studies
Living-room floor tiles
20 m², 4 mm thick, 10% waste.
Volume 0.088 m³; weight about 132 kg (about 7 × 20 kg bags).
Kitchen wall tiles
12 m², 3 mm thick, 10% waste.
Volume 0.040 m³; weight about 60 kg (3 bags).
FAQ
How is thin-set different from traditional mortar?
Thin-set uses a dedicated tile adhesive in a 3–5 mm layer — less material and stronger bond; traditional sand-cement is 15–20 mm and uses more.
Is thicker better?
No. Too thick wastes adhesive and risks hollow spots; pick the right thickness for the tile back and substrate, controlled with a notched trowel.
