Brick Wall Calculator
Enter brick wall length, height, thickness and brick size with mortar joint to compute wall volume, total bricks and mortar volume for quantity takeoff and pricing.
Input Data
Results
At a glance:A brick wall is laid in three dimensions: bricks per course = ⌊wall length ×1000 ÷ (brick length + joint)⌋, courses = ⌊wall height ×1000 ÷ (brick height + joint)⌋, through-thickness bricks = ⌊thickness ÷ (brick width + joint)⌋ (minimum 1). Total bricks = product of the three; brick solid volume = total bricks × single brick solid volume. Mortar volume = wall volume − total brick solid volume. This calculator simplifies using the brick width (102.5 mm) as the thickness direction.
Formula
Bricks per course = ⌊L×1000/(brick length+joint)⌋
Courses = ⌊H×1000/(brick height+joint)⌋
Through-thickness = ⌊T/(brick width+joint)⌋
Total bricks = per course × courses × through
Mortar = wall volume − total bricks × brick solid volume
$$n_L = \left\lfloor \frac{L\cdot1000}{l+j} \right\rfloor$$$$n_H = \left\lfloor \frac{H\cdot1000}{h+j} \right\rfloor$$$$n_T = \left\lfloor \frac{T}{w+j} \right\rfloor$$$$N = n_L\,n_H\,n_T$$$$V_m = V_w - N\,v_b$$How to Use
- Enter wall length, height and thickness (mm).
- Confirm the brick size (default standard UK brick) and mortar joint.
- The tool outputs wall volume, total bricks and mortar volume.
Case Studies
Single-brick partition
4×3 m, 100 mm thick, brick 215×102.5×65, joint 10 mm.
17 per course, 40 courses, 1 through; about 680 bricks; mortar about 0.13 m³.
Double-brick exterior wall
5×3 m, 220 mm thick.
2 through; about 1700 bricks; mortar about 0.4 m³.
FAQ
How does this differ from the brick calculator?
The older version counts bricks per area (single layer); this version computes total bricks and mortar volume from the wall's three dimensions (length, height, thickness), suited to whole-wall quantities.
Is the mortar volume accurate?
It is an ideal-masonry estimate, not subtracting window openings or wastage; add 5–10% wastage for actual purchasing.
