Beam Self-Weight Calculator

Enter beam width, height and concrete density to compute the cross-section area and self-weight line load (kg/m, kN/m) for structural dead-load and reinforcement estimates.

Input Data

Width
m
Height
m
Density
kg/m³

Results

Section Area
0.15m²
Line Load Mass
360kg/m
Line Load
3.53kN/m

At a glance:Section area = width × height (m²). Mass per metre = section area × concrete density (kg/m). Self-weight line load (kN/m) = mass per metre × gravity 9.81 ÷ 1000. This is the beam's own dead load; slab-transmitted load and live load must be added in design.

Formula

Section area = width × height

Mass per metre = section area × density

Line load = mass per metre × 9.81 / 1000

$$A = b h$$
$$m = A \rho$$
$$q = \frac{m\times 9.81}{1000}$$

How to Use

  1. Enter the beam width and height (m).
  2. Confirm the concrete density.
  3. The tool outputs section area, mass per metre and line load.

Case Studies

Floor main beam

0.3×0.5 m at density 2,400.

Section 0.15 m²; line weight 360 kg/m; line load 3.53 kN/m.

Basement large beam

0.4×0.8 m at density 2,500.

Section 0.32 m²; line weight 800 kg/m; line load 7.85 kN/m.

FAQ

How do line load and area load combine?

Slab area load transfers to the beam and becomes the beam's line load; the beam self-weight line load is added separately. The two together form the total beam dead load.

How much does lightweight concrete reduce?

Lowering density from 2,400 to 1,800 reduces the line load by the same 25% proportion, which helps lighten the structure and foundation.
