At a glance:Posts = ⌊length ÷ spacing⌋ + 1; handrail length = total balustrade length. Handrail height is generally at least 900 mm in Hong Kong.
Formula
Number of posts = ⌊length ÷ post spacing⌋ + 1.
Handrail length = total balustrade length.
$$n = \left\lfloor \frac{L}{s} \right\rfloor + 1$$$$R = L$$How to Use
- Enter the total balustrade length (m).
- Enter the post centre spacing (m).
- The tool returns the number of posts and the handrail length.
Case Studies

FAQ
What spacing should I use?
Too-wide spacing reduces stiffness and safety; 0.8–1.2 m is common. Glass balustrades may use wider spacing but are still limited by panel strength.
Is there a height regulation?
In Hong Kong the handrail height from the finished floor is generally at least 900 mm, with stricter requirements for greater fall heights, and openings must prevent children from climbing through.
