Gravel Blanket Calculator

Enter the blanket area and thickness to calculate the graded gravel volume and weight (tonnes) for foundations, drainage and landscaping.

At a glance:Gravel blanket volume = area × thickness (mm) ÷ 1000 × (1 + waste%). Weight = volume × gravel density ÷ 1000 (tonnes). Graded gravel is used as a foundation support, drainage and landscaping base; compacted density is about 1,400–1,600 kg/m³. The calculator estimates bulk material only.

Formula

Volume = area × thickness/1000 × (1 + waste%)

Weight = volume × density / 1000

$$V = A\frac{t}{1000}(1+w)$$
$$M = \frac{V\rho}{1000}$$

How to Use

  1. Enter the blanket area (m²).
  2. Enter the blanket thickness (mm).
  3. Confirm the gravel density and waste.
  4. The tool outputs the volume and weight.

Case Studies

Foundation support layer

50 m², 100 mm thick, density 1,500, waste 10%.

Volume 5.5 m³; weight about 8.25 t.

Landscape drainage layer

30 m², 50 mm thick, density 1,500.

Volume 1.65 m³; weight about 2.48 t.

FAQ

Is gravel different from stone dust?

Graded gravel has mixed particle sizes and drains well; stone dust is fine and drains poorly. Bedding layers usually use graded gravel for load and drainage.

How thick should it be?

Depending on use: landscape decoration 30–50 mm, foundation support 100–150 mm, driveway sub-base thicker.
