Power Calculator

Enter work and time (or force and velocity) to compute power P = W/t = F·v.

Input Data

Work
J
Time
s

Results

Power (W).
50W

At a glance:Power P is the rate at which work is done or energy is transferred: average P = W/t. For a force F moving an object at constant velocity v in its direction, P = F·v. The unit is the watt (W = J/s). Power combines force, distance and time and is central to engines, motors and energy efficiency. Instantaneous power is P = F·v = dW/dt. This tool accepts (W, t) or (F, v) and returns P.

Formula

P = W/t

P = F·v

$$P = \dfrac{W}{t}$$
$$P = F v = \tau \omega$$

How to Use

  1. Enter work W (J) and time t (s), or force F (N) and velocity v (m/s).
  2. The calculator returns power P.

Case Studies

Climbing stairs

W = 2000 J over t = 5 s.

P = 400 W.

A 400 W effort for 5 seconds.

FAQ

What is the difference between work and power?

Work is total energy transferred (J); power is how fast (J/s = W). Lifting the same load slowly or quickly takes the same work but different power.

Why P = F·v?

Work W = F·d, so P = W/t = F·(d/t) = F·v.
