At a glance:Mechanical power P is the rate at which work is done or energy is transferred. Average power is P = W/t where W is work and t is time. Instantaneously, for a force F acting on an object moving at velocity v in the force direction, P = F·v. The unit is the watt (W = J/s). Power combines the concepts of force, distance and time, making it central to engines, motors, pumps and human biomechanics.

Formula

Power from work: P = W/t

Power from force: P = F·v

$$P = \frac{W}{t} = F \cdot v$$

How to Use

  1. Enter work W (J) and time t (s), or force F (N) and velocity v (m/s).
  2. The calculator returns the power P (W).

Case Studies

Lifting a load

W = 980 J (100 kg, 1 m), t = 2 s.

P = 980/2 = 490 W.

A 0.5 kW motor could do this in 2 s.

FAQ

What is the difference between work and power?

Work is energy transferred (J); power is how fast that work is done (J/s = W). Lifting a weight slowly and quickly requires the same work but different power.

Why is P = F·v?

Work W = F·d, so power P = W/t = F·(d/t) = F·v, the force times the speed in its direction.
