Formula
Water = rice amount × ratio (cups of water per cup of rice).
$$V_{water} = V_{rice} \times r_{type}$$How to Use
- Pick the rice type.
- Enter the rice amount in cups.

FAQ
Why do ratios vary so much by rice type?
Grain starch structure and outer layers differ, affecting how fast and how much water is absorbed. Brown rice has a bran layer and parboiled rice is steamed-pressed, so each absorbs differently and needs its own ratio.
How much is one cup of rice?
A rice cup is about 180–200 ml, or 150–160 g of uncooked rice. The cup and pot markings on a rice cooker already match — just use them.
Can I cook other amounts with this?
Yes. The ratio does not change with amount; enter any quantity (0.5 cup, 6 cups) and the water scales proportionally.
What if the rice is too hard or too soft?
Too hard means too little water — next time add 1/4 to 1/2 cup more per cup of rice; too soft is the reverse. Use this calculator as a baseline, then fine-tune to taste.
Should I soak rice first?
Soaking white rice 15–30 min makes it fluffier; brown rice benefits from 30+ min. After soaking, the grains have already absorbed water, so use slightly less on the stove.
The cooker pot has markings — do I need this?
The pot markings are designed to the same ratio, so results match. The calculator helps for stovetop cooking, baked rice, or independent reference when fine-tuning a specific ratio.
