Baking Conversion Calculator
Convert common baking ingredients (sugar, flour, butter, salt, etc.) between tablespoons (tbsp) / teaspoons (tsp) and grams (g).
Input Data
Results
At a glance:Convert common baking ingredients (sugar, flour, butter, salt, etc.) between tablespoons (tbsp) / teaspoons (tsp) and grams (g).
Formula
Each ingredient has its own density (grams per tbsp).
Weight (g) = amount × grams-per-unit for the chosen ingredient and unit.
How to Use
- Pick the baking ingredient.
- Enter the amount and choose the source unit (g / tbsp / tsp / cup).
- The calculator returns the equivalent weight in grams and approximate tablespoons.
FAQ
Why does 1 tbsp of flour weigh a different amount from 1 tbsp of sugar?
Volume measures like tablespoons capture a fixed space, but each ingredient has its own density (grams per millilitre). Flour is light and airy, butter is denser, and brown sugar is heavier still. Converting by weight (grams) removes that ambiguity, which is why baking recipes that use grams are more consistent.
How many grams are in one tablespoon (tbsp) and one teaspoon (tsp)?
As a rule of thumb, 1 tablespoon = 15 ml and 1 teaspoon = 5 ml. This calculator applies each ingredient's density to those volumes, so 1 tbsp of water is about 15 g, while 1 tbsp of flour is only about 8 g because flour's density is roughly 0.53 g/ml.
Can I use cups instead of tablespoons for baking conversion?
Yes. One US cup is 240 ml (about 16 tbsp). The calculator supports cup as a source unit and converts it to grams the same way. For best accuracy in baking, however, a kitchen scale reading in grams is recommended over any volume measure.
Why does baking need such precise measurement?
Unlike savoury cooking, baking is a chemical reaction where the ratio of flour, sugar, fat and leavening determines the texture. Small volume errors with light ingredients such as flour or cocoa powder can noticeably change the result, so weight-based conversion is preferred.
