At a glance:After a set forgiveness period of monthly payments, the outstanding balance is forgiven; this calculator shows that remaining balance and what has been paid to date.

Formula

monthlyPayment = loanAmount × r·(1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1) (r = annualRate%/12, n = termYears×12)

Replay the amortisation for yearsPaid to get principalPaid, totalPaid, and forgivenBalance = remaining principal.

$$M = \dfrac{L\cdot i}{1-(1+i)^{-n}}$$
$$B_k = L(1+i)^k - M\cdot\dfrac{(1+i)^k-1}{i}$$

How to Use

  1. Enter the loan amount, annual rate, and term.
  2. Enter the years already paid.
  3. Review the forgivable balance, monthly payment, and amounts paid.

FAQ

Does Hong Kong have a student-loan forgiveness programme?

No. Hong Kong's tertiary student aid schemes (e.g. the means-tested grant-and-loan and the non-means-tested loan scheme, NLSPS) have no 'auto-forgive the balance after a set period' arrangement; borrowers must repay in full. The 'forgivable balance' here is the remaining principal that a forgiveness regime would waive at the same repayment progress — useful for cross-system understanding, not a local entitlement.

Why do I still owe so much after paying half the term?

Because an amortising loan pays interest first, principal later. Early payments are mostly interest, so principal falls slowly; after half the original term you may still owe over 60% of the principal. That is exactly why early-period forgiveness is so valuable.

Is a forgiven balance taxable?

It depends on the tax regime. In some overseas systems the waived balance is treated as taxable income. Hong Kong has no such forgiveness, so it does not arise here; for overseas loans, consult a local tax professional.

Is early repayment of a student loan worth it?

Compare the rate with your opportunity cost. If the loan rate exceeds the safe return on other investments, early repayment saves more; if very low (or interest-free), keeping the cash for higher-return use or an emergency fund may be better. Late in the term, interest is a small share, so early-repayment savings are limited.

Why does the result differ slightly from my bank statement?

This calculator uses the standard amortising formula with a fixed rate and on-time payments. Real loans may have floating rates, grace periods, admin fees or different accrual, so the balance may differ slightly; rely on the lender's official statement.
