FAQ

Does Hong Kong law fix overtime pay at 1.5×?

No. The Employment Ordinance sets no statutory overtime rate; whether overtime is paid and at what multiplier depends on the employment contract or company policy. Many industries use 1.5× (time and a half) as a convention, but your contract governs. The multiplier here is adjustable.

Does a 12-hour shift always mean 4 hours of overtime?

Not necessarily — it depends on how the company defines 'normal hours'. Some count all 12 as normal and handle meal breaks separately; others set 8 as normal and the rest as overtime. This calculator lets you set normal and overtime hours to match your actual arrangement.

Does the meal break count as working hours?

It depends on the contract. A paid meal break counts as paid hours; an unpaid one does not. If your 12-hour shift has 1 hour unpaid meal, the actual paid hours are 11 — adjust the normal/overtime hours accordingly before calculating.

Are there rest-day rules for shift work?

Yes. Under the Employment Ordinance, an employee who has been employed continuously for the required period is entitled to at least one rest day in every period of seven days. Working on a rest day generally requires a substitute holiday or contractual compensation. Schedule 12-hour shifts in compliance with rest-day rules.

Is there extra allowance for night shifts or holidays?

Hong Kong law does not mandate night-shift allowances or holiday pay increments (statutory holidays have their own pay rules), but many healthcare and security employers offer night allowances or holiday premiums. Add those separately to your monthly estimate; this calculator focuses on the core of base rate and overtime pay.
