Wall Load Calculator
Enter the wall thickness, height and material density to calculate the self-weight per metre (kg/m) and line load (kN/m) for brick and concrete walls, for structural dead-load and foundation assessment.
Input Data
Results
At a glance:Cross-section per metre = thickness × height (m²). Mass per metre = cross-section × material density (kg/m). Line load (kN/m) = mass per metre × gravity 9.81 ÷ 1000. Density depends on material: solid brick about 1,800–2,000 kg/m³, light brick lower, concrete about 2,400. This is the wall's own dead load, which must be counted when sizing foundations and beams.
Formula
Cross-section = thickness × height
Mass per metre = cross-section × density
Line load = mass per metre × 9.81 / 1000
$$A = t h$$$$m = A \rho$$$$q = \frac{m\times 9.81}{1000}$$How to Use
- Enter the wall thickness and height (m).
- Select the material density (brick or concrete).
- The tool outputs the cross-section, mass per metre and line load.
Case Studies
Single-brick load-bearing wall
0.1 m thick, 3 m high, brick 1,900.
Section 0.3 m²; line weight 570 kg/m; line load 5.6 kN/m.
Concrete core wall
0.2 m thick, 3 m high, concrete 2,400.
Section 0.6 m²; line weight 1,440 kg/m; line load 14.1 kN/m.
FAQ
How different are brick and concrete densities?
Brick is about 1,900 and concrete about 2,400 kg/m³, so a concrete wall of the same thickness is clearly heavier.
Where does the line load go?
The wall self-weight acts as a line load to the foundation or transfer beam below, forming part of the structural dead load.
