At a glance:The calculator uses the model 'area ÷ coverage per tile'. Coverage per tile includes the tile and its surrounding joint: (tile length + joint) × (tile width + joint). Tiles needed = tiling area × (1 + waste%) ÷ coverage, rounded up; boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up; cost = boxes × price per box.
Formula
Tiling area A = length × width
Coverage per tile a = (tile length + joint) × (tile width + joint)
Tiles N = ⌈ A × (1 + waste%) ÷ a ⌉
Boxes B = ⌈ N ÷ tiles per box ⌉
Total cost = B × price per box
E.g. 5m×4m, 300×300 tile, 2mm joint, 10% waste → about 242 tiles, 25 boxes
$$A = L \times W$$$$a = (l_t + g)(w_t + g)$$$$N = \left\lceil \frac{A(1+w\%)}{a} \right\rceil$$$$B = \left\lceil \frac{N}{n_b} \right\rceil$$How to Use
- Enter the room length and width.
- Enter the tile length and width (cm).
- Set the joint width (0 for seamless, 2–5 mm typical).
- Set the waste percentage (default 10%).
- Enter tiles per box and price per box.
- The tool outputs tiles, boxes and cost.
Tiles per m² for common sizes (no waste)
| Tile size | Area each | Per m² |
|---|---|---|
| 300 × 300 mm | 0.09 m² | about 12 |
| 300 × 600 mm | 0.18 m² | about 6 |
| 600 × 600 mm | 0.36 m² | about 3 |
| 800 × 800 mm | 0.64 m² | about 2 |
Theoretical values excluding joint and waste; add 10% when ordering.
Case Studies
Bathroom floor
Bathroom 2m×1.5m, 300×300 mm tile, 2 mm joint.
Area 3 m², coverage about 0.0912 m²/tile.
With 10% waste about 37 tiles, about 4 boxes.
Living-room large tiles
Living room 5m×4m, 800×800 mm tile, 3 mm joint.
Coverage about 0.645 m²; with 10% waste about 35 tiles.
3 per box → about 12 boxes, good for one order.
Kitchen wall
Kitchen wall 3 m long, 2.4 m high, 300×600 mm tile.
Wall 7.2 m², coverage about 0.181 m².
With waste about 44 tiles; keep a few for later repair.
FAQ
How is the tile count calculated?
Tiles needed = area × (1 + waste%) ÷ coverage per tile, rounded up. Coverage already includes the tile and surrounding joint.
Does joint width affect tile count?
Yes, but only slightly. Wider joints spread each tile over more area, slightly reducing the count.
What waste percentage to use?
Usually 10%. Corners, diagonal or patterned layouts suggest 15–20%.
Why buy by the box?
Tiles are sold per box with a fixed count. Boxes = ⌈tiles ÷ per box⌉, so a fractional remainder still needs a whole extra box.
Can walls and floors use the same calculation?
Yes. For a wall, set length to wall length and width to wall height. Deduct window/door areas yourself first.
