At a glance:Gravel quantity follows volume = area × depth and weight = volume × density. Densities differ a lot by type and moisture; dry gravel is lighter than wet, and decorative stones such as Cotswold gold or dolomite are heavier. Cost is weight in tonnes × price per tonne. Because gravel compacts and some is lost at edges, order 5–10% extra. This calculator estimates bulk material only and excludes geotextile, edging and delivery.

Formula

Area = length × width

Volume = area × depth

Weight = volume × density

Total cost = weight (t) × price per tonne

$$A = L \cdot W$$
$$V = A \cdot t$$
$$M = V \cdot \rho$$
$$C = \frac{M}{1000} \cdot p$$

How to Use

  1. Select a gravel type (if unsure, choose 'Crushed stone' or 'Regular gravel').
  2. Enter the laying length and width (m).
  3. Enter the laying depth (cm).
  4. To estimate cost, enter the price per tonne of gravel.
  5. The tool outputs the area, volume, weight and total cost.
  6. When ordering, add 5–10% allowance to the weight.

Case Studies

Garden path

10 m × 1 m × 5 cm, regular 1,346 kg/m³.

Area 10 m²; volume 0.5 m³; weight 673 kg; at HKD 150/t about HKD 101.

Driveway base

10 m × 5 m × 12 cm, crushed stone 1,600 kg/m³.

Area 50 m²; volume 6 m³; weight 9,600 kg; at HKD 130/t about HKD 1,248.

FAQ

What depth of gravel do I need?

Walkways about 5 cm, driveways 10–15 cm to spread load and resist rutting; heavier vehicles need more.

Why does moisture change the weight?

Wet gravel holds water in the voids and can be 20–30% heavier than dry, so the delivered tonnage differs from the dry estimate.
