At a glance:Force is an interaction that changes an object's motion. Newton's second law states the net force equals mass times acceleration: F = m·a (more generally F = dp/dt). Given any two of F, m, a, the third follows: a = F/m, m = F/a. The newton (N) is the SI unit, 1 N = 1 kg·m/s². This tool lets you pick which variable to solve for and enter the other two. Force is a vector; F here is the net (resultant) force. Weight is the special case W = m·g under gravity.

Formula

F = m·a

a = F/m

m = F/a

How to Use

  1. Select which quantity to solve for (force, mass or acceleration).
  2. Enter the other two values.
  3. The calculator returns the result.

Case Studies

Pushing a box

m = 20 kg, a = 3 m/s².

F = 20×3 = 60 N.

Net force needed to accelerate it.

FAQ

Is F the net force?

Yes — the vector sum of all forces. If forces balance, net F = 0 and a = 0 even if individual forces are nonzero.

How is force related to weight?

Weight W = m·g is the gravitational force; it is a particular F in F = m·a where a = g. On Earth a 10 kg mass weighs ~98 N.
