FAQ

What savings rate is healthy?

A common benchmark is 20% or above; FIRE (financial independence) followers often aim for 50% or higher. Consistency matters more than any single month's figure.

Should I use pre-tax or after-tax income?

Use after-tax (take-home) income, because tax and MPF are no longer freely saveable. If you want to include the MPF contribution, treat it as forced savings and add it in.

Which matters more, savings rate or investment return?

Early on, the savings rate dominates — with a small base the absolute return is limited, so raising the rate builds the principal faster. Later, as the asset base grows, the return rate gradually takes over.

Should loan principal repayment count as an expense?

Consumption debt (e.g. credit cards) counts as an expense. Repaying a mortgage on your own home can be treated as forced saving (asset building). Keep your definition consistent.

What does a negative savings rate mean?

It means you are spending more than you earn, drawing on past savings or borrowing. Sustained negatives erode wealth; review expenses or increase income. The tool shows the negative value as a warning.

How can I raise my savings rate?

Attack both sides: control fixed costs (housing, subscriptions) and pay yourself first — sweep savings on payday. Automatic transfers of 20% first, then live on the rest, beat saving whatever is left at month end.
